Web3\u2014the adoption of decentralized, blockchain-enabled services\u2014is quickly becoming a popular manner for developers and service providers to provide \u201ctrue ownership\u201d of digital assets like in-game objects, investments, and even proof of ownership over physical objects. Whoever holds the key to such an asset is the de facto owner or \u201ccustodian\u201d of it, and few solutions have provided a way to enable shared custody of an asset.<\/span><\/p>\n

Security around these digital assets requires the management of strong cryptographic keys, which can also be complex and costly for developers. Lost keys are equivalent to lost assets and, in public blockchains, there is no built-in recovery mechanism to handle loss or theft. Solving this problem of user-controlled key management is one of the most critical elements in any system of user-controlled digital assets.<\/span><\/p>\n

Lock-Keeper uses a combination of extensive cryptographic software techniques to distribute the keys for security and privacy and specially designed hardware to provide a trusted computing environment. As a result, Lock-Keeper provides a flexible infrastructure for developers to provide the right balance of security and privacy for the service\u2019s digital asset needs.<\/span><\/p>\n

With Lock-Keeper, users are able to maintain control over their own keys while they reside in redundant and secure hardware enclaves within Bolt\u2019s infrastructure. Both service providers and users are able to collaboratively sign certificates to use the keys in a true multi-custodial manner. And keys can be recovered by users if they are lost or stolen.<\/span><\/p>\n

Lock-Keeper is currently in implementation by early adopters and partners of Bolt Labs, including Forte Labs Inc., a blockchain gaming infrastructure provider that helps developers apply blockchain technology to their game economies to support deeper monetization and engagement with their players.<\/span><\/p>\n
